Safety Shower Monitoring Solution – Multi-Sensor Options for Employee Safety and OSHA Compliance
Eyewash and safety shower stations were developed to provide emergency relief to workers accidentally exposed to corrosive or toxic materials. Company policies and OSHA regulations require systems and procedures to ensure operational readiness of these safety stations and reporting of incidents of chemical exposure. The solution: Multi-sensor wireless nodes enable monitoring of water supply conditions, activation modes, remote alarms and time stamping of events. Sensing options include water supply pressure, temperature, proximity or flow switch activation alarms. Central monitoring station is alerted on incident or water supply conditions outside acceptable range. The result: Companies can ensure reliability of safety station operation and immediate response to remote activation by employees exposed to dangerous chemicals. Continuous record keeping documents readiness, test events and emergency alarms.

Solutions for oil & gas production
AKS Technologies, an integrated oilfield services company providing well testing and data acquisition solutions, needed a platform for wire-free sensing and communications in Class 1 Division 1 hazardous environments. A variety of sensor types are required for continuous monitoring of oil and gas production wells including, pressure, temperature, level, flow and valve position. The solution: Specific sensors to meet all of the requirements for range and accuracy were researched, characterized and a complete line of wireless instrumentation created. A novel long-life battery powered control system was an element of the design, minimizing the need for costly solar power modules. The result: The wireless measurement systems now comprise a significant engine for growth of AKS business, enabling rapid deployment, lower cost and improved availability to their clients.

Innovative Aquaculture Solution
Reliant Water Technologies, a leading supplier of water treatment measurement and control systems needed the capability to deploy tether-free dissolved oxygen sensors to support a unique system to serve the Aquaculture market. The system continuously measures and controls water chemistry to optimize the quality and growth rate of aquaculture products. The solution: AWS designed a wireless version of the Reliant DO sensor that enables communication throughout the network of ponds over large footprints. AWS worked with Reliant to develop battery powered buoy supported sensors with wireless communication back to a monitoring and control system that automatically controls pond aerators. The result: The new system provides fish producers with higher productivity while reducing capital cost and time to deploy. These attributes have created a compelling competitive advantage for Reliant.
Continuous Valve Monitoring – EPA Compliance Solution
California’s strict air quality regulations mandated continuous monitoring of VOC pressure relief valves that vent to atmosphere. Refineries and petrochemical plants located in EPA non-attainment areas required an economical solution to comply with the new rules. Due to the unique structure at one of the affected refineries, a sensor that would detect liquid release events also had to be developed. The solution: AWS developed an array of non-invasive sensors that meet the requirements of California Air Quality Rule 1173. The newly designed liquid release sensor underwent extensive testing and design review by third party testing laboratories to validate and certify performance. The project was closely managed to develop, test and produce in parallel to meet a 3 month schedule. The result: The systems deployed meet the environmental protection needs of the community while presenting a fast, flexible solution to improve safety and valve maintenance and increasing plant throughput. AWS met the short schedule for design, FM certification, and production to meet the compliance deadline.

Continuous Steam Trap Monitoring Solution – Energy Efficiency with Fast Payback
It is estimated that between 10 and 20% of total steam energy can be lost through malfunctioning steam traps. The DOE recommends an aggressive program of inspection to minimize energy loss. Steam energy is used in a wide variety of industrial and commercial environments for power, heat and process management. Plugged traps can create conditions for water hammer and catastrophic steam pipe ruptures. The solution: Non-invasive acoustic and/or temperature wireless sensors enable continuous monitoring of steam traps in all types of industrial and commercial environments. Sensors detect plugged or blow through trap conditions. Targeting higher pressure steam traps maximizes benefits of continuous monitoring. The result: Double digit percentage improvement in steam energy efficiency. The return on investment is typically measured in months with ongoing benefits accumulated. If monitored in conformance with ISO 14000, marketable carbon credits further enhance benefits.

Critical Temperature Monitoring Solutions – Energy Efficiency and Quality
Temperature management is critical and often determines the quality of products and the energy efficiency of processes. Specialized processes including flash freezing food, storing perishable medicines, cement, lime and metal production rely heavily on continuous temperature measurement. The solution: Wireless temperature sensors can be readily deployed in portable skids and storage containers as well as rotating equipment. Impervious to EMI corruption of wired units, wireless solutions can be deployed in existing facilities with minimal infrastructure. The result: Real time actual temperature measurement enables control based on accurate data rather than inferred or periodic samples. Gains can exceed 10% efficiency improvement and waste reduction while providing continuous time stamped history for analysis and verification.
